People who suffer from particular phobias often have to put up with others misunderstanding or trivialising their issues. The fear of flying is a classic example of this. Although phobias are to do with intense fears about things which actually involve very little danger, the fears themselves need to be taken seriously.
Fear of flying is a very common fear; approximately one tenth of the population worry about flying, so telling people to simply ‘think positive’ is counterproductive. People need to know how to deal with their feelings. This approach is at the heart of my work as a Clinical Hypnotherapist.
One of the most common issues in the fear of flying is about feeling a lack of control. The work that I do with people in this area is about enabling them to feel or experience things in a different way – a way that gives them back a feeling of control.
All this is about helping my clients to break habits of a psychological origin, thereby breaking a vicious circle in the process. This kind of therapy is about helping people to help themselves. It usually has a finite shape in terms of the amount of sessions required. With between 3 and 5 weekly sessions of hypnotherapy, clients begin to feel the benefit of the treatment.
Clients who suffer from fear of flying and other phobias often describe how the treatments very quickly help them modify or eliminate their disabling symptoms, which can be managed by simple techniques which are easily learned.
The great advantage of hypnotherapy is that these techniques can be used throughout clients’ lives, enabling them to manage difficult situations much better.
