CBT for Depression. Depression is a destructive mental state that can be extremely hard to escape. Repeated negative thoughts recurring in an ongoing downward spiral, can stop us from seeing ourselves and our world as it really is. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy offers practical ways for people to manage how they respond to difficult experiences and thoughts by providing techniques to manage these experiences.CBT for depression

CBT is not some kind of rosy panacea that cushions people from the real world or causes them to deny the harsh realities of their existence. Life is what it is, with all of its ups and downs. To be able to cope, we do need to see and appreciate all of these things in perspective. CBT cannot change things that are wrong but it can improve an individual’s perception of those things by helping them to manage their response to negative experiences, feelings and mindsets. It helps people understand that they have a choice of how to think about situations in more logical, practical and helpful ways.

CBT does this by enabling individuals to reserve judgement on themselves, others and the world, helping them appreciate the fact that their value as unique yet fallible individuals always stays constant – regardless of whether they succeed or fail. With the therapist, people work through hindrances so that they can believe and own this fundamental truth. Over time, a person’s self-belief and sense of intrinsic value become rock-solid and remain so, whether others agree with them or not.

Negative thoughts often tend to become hungry and ravenous for more until there is very little space left in a person’s mind for anything else. With CBT, people learn, practice and choose not to engage with these overwhelming, negative thoughts, managing them effectively so that they no longer occupy disproportionate space and importance in their minds.

The patient works with the therapist using a 4-step process:

1. Identifying faulty pattern thinking.

2. Moving to a more rational, realistic way of thinking.

3. Leaving negative, depressive feelings behind and developing a more realistic perspective on life.

4. Gradually depression lifts, energy returns and every day is no longer the sad, predictable thing it once was

In very simple terms, it is a very good idea to think of CBT for depression. This therapy gives people powerful tools to manage their lives and therefore lead a happier more fulfilled existence.
